Environmental Responsibility
Stewardship of the environment... protection of the health and safety of
our employees and neighbors...
Words Into Actions
It is one thing to state, as we do in
The Roche Group Policy on Safety,
Health and Environmental Protection, that everyone in the organization
must work under optimal conditions of health and safety, and that we
maintain high ethical and social standards when it comes to protecting
the environment. But it is another to transform this worthy intention
into reality.
In addition, the standards we set for ourselves often go far beyond legal
and regulatory requirements. For over 20 years, the Nutley site has been
involved in highly successful programs to reduce energy consumption and
eliminate air and water pollution. Take, for example, the issue of global
warming. Scientists believe that
greenhouse gases may
be contributing to gradual warming of the earth's atmosphere, threatening
species, climates and human health. Between 2001 and 2006, Roche reduced
its greenhouse gas emissions at the Nutley site by more than 40%. This
translates into preventing some 59,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases per year from
being released into the atmosphere.
Our commitment to environmental protection, health and safety remains
unabated and is illustrated by a number of ongoing programs:
conserving energy,
protecting water resources,
contributing to clean air,
saving resources through recycling,
preparing for an emergency and
remediation.
