Innovative R&D - Focused on the Future of Medicine

Roche has been a leader in biomedical research since the birth of the pharmaceutical industry. In 1896, Fritz Hoffmann, recently married to Adele La Roche, established a small but successful pharmaceutical specialties company with a unique objective: to develop and mass produce novel drugs of uniform strength and quality and then market them internationally. One hundred years later, Fritz Hoffmann's single laboratory has grown into Roche Holding Ltd., a world renowned, multinational health care organization surpassing even its founder's expectations.

Today, Roche has one of the strongest pipelines in the pharmaceutical industry, the result of outstanding alliances with our partners and complementing internal research. As of December 31, 2007, Roche has a total of 57 New Molecular Entitles (NMEs) and 58 additional indications in its pipeline, including new products for depression, diabetes, oncology and rheumatoid arthritis. Research is conducted in the following Disease Biology Areas: central nervous system disorders; inflammation, including respiratory and auto-immune diseases; metabolic diseases; oncology; and virology, including HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C.
