Ask Patrick Higgins what
gives him the most satisfaction from being at Roche and his thoughts
turn to his colleagues: "When I see the people that I work
with, grow, develop and move on in their careers, that’s
what I like most about working here," he explains.
In 1996, Higgins joined Roche as a Business Unit Director in field
sales after working for a competitor for 13 years. "Before
I arrived here, I came to respect Roche as a competitor," he
adds. Two years later, he became Director of Marketing for HCV
(hepatitis C), HIV/AIDS, and CMV (Cytomegalovirus), with responsibilities
that included preparations for the future launches of several key,
new HIV and HCV products. In 2000, Patrick became National Sales
Director for Virology, and in 2003, he was promoted to Vice President,
Hepatology, Sales and Marketing. In his current position, Patrick
is responsible for the marketing, medical and sales strategies
for Roche’s market-leading treatment for hepatitis C.
Commenting on career development at Roche, Patrick Higgins says
he found "a whole host of opportunities here that were broader
than at my previous company, including the ability to move among
a number of disciplines." Adds Patrick, "Roche offers
lots of opportunities, if you want them, including global exposure." As
to career development advice, Higgins is a believer in the need
to sometimes make a lateral move in order to advance. "The
ladder up isn’t always a straight line," he explains.
Patrick also advises people to learn the basics of their present
job first, before aspiring to move on to new opportunities "if
they expand your scope or your responsibilities."
